Our Approach to Therapy
- Our goal is to create a nurturing and supportive therapy environment where children experiencing difficulty with speech and/or language skills will benefit from a therapy program designed to meet their individual needs. In order to facilitate progress, we prefer that therapy take place in the child’s natural environment whenever possible. Therapy may take place at the child’s home, childcare center, or school. This method not only provides a comfortable setting for a more integrated and functional approach to therapy, but it facilitates carryover between therapy and school. Our emphasis is always on increasing every opportunity for the child’s success.
- Speech-Language Therapy should be a fun and positive experience. We utilize a variety of developmentally appropriate toys, games, activities and procedures taking each child’s chronological age and cognitive-developmental level into consideration. An extensive collection of materials is used to meet the very unique needs and goals established for each child.
- We believe that successful therapy begins with the “team”. Parents, educator, caregiver, physician, and speech-language pathologist working together is the best way to help ensure the child’s success. With the parents’ permission, goals and progress are discussed with the child’s teachers, caregiver, and other professionals involved in the child’s development. Communication within the team increases the carryover throughout the child’s day and between sessions. The frequency and intensity of the therapy sessions will depend on the type and severity of the speech and/or language disorder.
- We believe in a family centered approach to therapy. Parents are a very important part of the therapy process, and are encouraged to be involved in the therapy process. Once goals are established parents are encouraged to carryover therapy activities at home. As well, we provide parents and teachers with information and suggestions to facilitate this carryover. Progress is shared with the child’s parents, and goals are updated and consistently re-established to meet the changing needs of each child.
